Snake Awareness for Hikers

From AUD $129.00
  • Duration: 4 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mundaring, WA
  • Product code: PJDY1Y

When we hike in Western Australia, we’re stepping into snake habitat. Understanding these fascinating animals can help us explore with greater awareness, respect and confidence.

Snake Awareness for Hikers takes the uncertainty out of snake encounters by giving you practical knowledge you can use when you’re out exploring. It’s exactly what The Hike Hub is about — building the skills, knowledge and confidence to become a more capable hiker.

Led by an experienced snake educator, this two-hour workshop explores snake behaviour, common trail encounters and how to respond calmly and safely if you come across one. We’ll unpack the psychology of our fear of snakes, how to reduce the risk of snake bites, essential first aid and what to do if a bite occurs in a remote location.

We’ll cover:

  • Snake behaviour and common trail encounters

  • Venomous and non-venomous snakes

  • Fear, perception and how it influences our response

  • How to respond safely to a snake encounter

  • Reducing your risk of snake bite

  • What to carry during snake season

  • Snake bite first aid and pressure immobilisation

  • Managing a snake bite in a remote location

  • Common snake myths and misconceptions

You’ll also safely observe both venomous and non-venomous snakes during a controlled live demonstration, giving you the opportunity to see their behaviour and characteristics up close.

Combine your learnings with a 3km hike in the surrounding jarrah/marri bushland and a delicious morning tea with plenty of time for questions and the chance to connect with other hikers.

You don’t need to be fearless to be a confident hiker. Understanding the environment, knowing how to prepare and having the skills to respond when something unexpected happens are all part of becoming a more capable adventurer.
